Let’s be so forreal: the idea of a perfectly clean house went out the window around baby number two. Now with four boys, including twin toddlers, my cleaning routine is more about survival than sparkle – I definitely need to look into the best local maid service as I need help!
I used to think I needed massive deep-cleaning marathons to “get caught up,” but those just don’t happen anymore. What I’ve learned is that little habits add up. I don’t have hours to scrub grout or wipe baseboards, but I do have a system that keeps my house livable and my sanity (mostly) intact.
If you’re a busy mom feeling like you can’t keep up, here’s what I actually make time for and what I’ve let go.
1. I Stick to a Daily Bare Minimum List
Every day, I try to hit these five tasks:
- Make the beds (okay, maybe just one)
- Dishes out of the sink
- Quick wipe-down of kitchen counters
- A load of laundry or moving yesterday’s forgotten load
- Pick up visible floor clutter like toys or crumbs
This usually takes 20 to 30 minutes and helps the house feel more manageable without becoming overwhelming.
2. I Time Myself to Avoid Getting Stuck
I often set a 10-minute timer to clean the bathroom or sweep the floor. Knowing there’s a clear endpoint keeps me from getting sucked into reorganizing drawers or deep-cleaning windowsills.
Some days are messier than others, but a little bit goes a long way.
3. I Keep My Favorite Supplies Simple and Handy
The less I overcomplicate my cleaning products, the more I actually use them. I keep a small basket of essentials in each bathroom: an all-purpose spray, a toilet brush, and an eco-friendly bathroom cloth I can rinse and reuse.
I switched from paper towels to reusable cloths, and it made a huge difference. They clean better, don’t leave lint, and are so much more sustainable.
4. I Embrace “Good Enough” Clean
This mindset shift has saved my peace. My house doesn’t look like a Pinterest board, and that’s okay. I focus on clean enough to feel calm, not perfect.
My kids won’t remember spotless baseboards, but they will remember a mom who wasn’t constantly frustrated by the mess.
5. I Do a Weekly Reset (Kind of)
Usually on Sundays, I try to:
- Wipe down light switches and door handles
- Vacuum the main living areas
- Clean out the fridge
- Deep clean the kids’ bathroom
This keeps things from building up too long and gives me a clean-ish slate for the week ahead.
If you’re in a season where your home feels chaotic, know that you’re not alone. Cleaning routines don’t have to be complicated. Start small, keep it consistent, and let go of perfection.
One easy change that helped me was swapping to eco-friendly cleaning cloths. They’ve made my routine easier, faster, and a bit more sustainable.
