Wearing clothes you like feels a bit tricky as a mom. Pregnancy fashion is all the rage these days, which is great for feeling stylish and comfortable during those difficult nine months! But how about dressing up once the kids have hit the terrible twos and you’re constantly wary of vomit stains? How are you supposed to feel good in what you wear when you’ve got toddlers to take care of?!
But being fashionable and being a mom can go hand in hand. You don’t even need to be too careful about what you wear either, as long as you’ve got some easy clean materials in the wardrobe. You really can feel good in your clothes again, no matter how limited you think your outfit choices are right now.
And if you need a bit of inspiration to get back into the swing of your style, check out the hints and tips down below.
What Kind of Style Do You Like?
Your style is naturally going to change over time, and you may dress differently based on what you typically get up to in life, but often enough we force ourselves to wear clothes outside of our innate style simply because it’s easier, cheaper, or more practical. But that’s the kind of attitude we need to bust!
Mothers are allowed to wear whatever they want, as long as it feels comfortable and they feel like they look good when they check the mirror. So, is there a style you wore prior to being a mother that you’d like to revisit? Don’t hold back – have a go at putting those outfits together again and start feeling like yourself!
Buy Plenty of New Cotton Pieces
Cotton is the easiest type of material to wash and keep clean, as it is a quick drying fabric that prevents moisture from sitting on the surface for too long and spreading. If you’ve got primarily cotton pieces in your wardrobe, you won’t have to worry too much about getting your favourite clothes dirty while you do your usual mommy jobs. And cotton tends to be very affordable as well, so you won’t run out of options when you’re out clothes shopping!
Find a Signature Scent
Scent is a big part of feeling stylish. When you can throw a bit of perfume on once you’ve put an outfit together, you’re going to add a very personal and dynamic finishing touch. Indeed, many people underestimate just how important smell is, and if you want to feel really good in your outfits, you’re going to need a good bit of scent on your skin!
We all have our own innate scents, but finding a signature scent you can spritz around you is going to help you feel more confident and comfortable in your style going forward. Try out as many different bottles as you like until you find one you’re happy with, and then don’t be afraid to put it on!
Combine Style and Function in Your Accessories
If you don’t have many accessories in your wardrobe right now, think about stocking up on stylish items that also offer a lot of function. Some thermal hats for women are a good example of such an accessory, as you can keep your head and ears warm against deep seated chills while not compromising on your aesthetic. Hats are an underappreciated accessory, but they can add so much depth and practicality to an outfit!
Keep this in mind whenever you go accessory shopping. You want to buy things that both look good and work for you. Even traditional items like necklaces and earrings need to have that sense of style and functionality about them. If you’ve got grabby toddlers, for example, dangly or oversized hoop earrings might not be the best choice for you!
Don’t Be Afraid of Wearing White
White seems to be a no-go color when you’ve got young kids. If they bring sticky hands around you and reach out for a hug, you could end up with all kinds of hard to wash out stains. If you love wearing white, it’ll be your favorite pieces that’ll fall victim to mucky handprints!
However, we don’t think you should be afraid of wearing white. It’s a very versatile color, it helps to highlight all kinds of other colors, and you can buy plenty of wardrobe basics in shades and tones of white, creams, and light greys. Don’t let the idea that you might have to wash your clothes a little more often cut out this entire subsection of your wardrobe!
If wearing white makes you feel good, make sure you wear it often, and always have a tide pen in your bag when you’re out and about.
Choose Outfits with the Kids
What do you think mommy should wear? This might not be a question you’ve directed at your child before now, but it can be a fun thing to decide together, especially if the two of you like picking out their clothes for the day. If they can do the same for you, investing in style and expressing yourself is going to become part of your normal routine. That’s a great thing to teach the kids.
Of course, any truly wild suggestions can be vetoed and you can put on what you like, but providing them with a choice between things like the shoes you’re thinking of wearing will help them get involved in a constructive way. And you never know, you might end up raising a little fashionista who one day designs an entire designer range of their own!
Being fashionable, and being a mom, aren’t mutually exclusive lifestyles. You can have both and be much happier because of it! Stains come and go, you can always chuck your clothes in the washing machine, and you can rope the kids into caring about your fashion choices. It’s a bit of fun, even if it feels hectic, and that’s something all moms need more of!
