Ever thought about giving your child’s room a total makeover without breaking the bank or, let’s be honest, your back? As they age, we all know their taste and likes change- the same glow-in-the-dark star-gazing room isn’t that magical anymore. In this post, we are talking about DIY room makeovers. A kids’ room transformation that’s not only easy on the wallet but actually fun to do! I am planning some upcoming DIY kid room makeovers of my own soon for my two older boys and my twin toddlers. I’m looking forward to letting them weigh in on the decisions!
Step 1: Picking the Perfect Theme
What really makes your child’s eyes light up? The fun of being a kid is that you have limitless possibilities. Now’s the time to let their creativity shine and teach them that there is no right way to be be creative. I can’t wait to have my kiddos help me pick out themes and colors! But this isn’t just about picking colors; it’s about setting the whole vibe for the room so that it becomes a calming space for both you and them. We could all use a little more calm with kids!
Step 2: Color Me Happy!
You might not believe it, but a fresh coat of paint can work wonders in a room. It can make the space feel bigger, cozier, or just plain more fun. Choose a color scheme that resonates with the theme and brings a smile to your child’s face. Dreaming of ocean blues for a seaside vibe, or vibrant greens for a jungle retreat? Go for it! And if you’re in the mood to shake things up, why not throw in an accent wall that stands out? I am absolutely obsessed with the scalloped accent wall I painted in my living room/play area. It brings me joy every single day!
Step 3: Furniture, Layout, and a Learning Corner
Let’s map out the setup first. Start by defining what you want to achieve- a fun exercise can be to help them design and draw it out with you. Aim to create a space that’s as fun as it is functional, with a dash of educational charm. And for that learning corner—nestle a cozy chair and a cute desk into a quiet spot to carve out a charming study nook. It’s amazing how a creative space can make learning more fun!
Step 4: It’s All in the Details
Now for the best part: adding personal touches. Cozy up the space with soft bedding, vibrant curtains, and maybe a rug that ties everything together. Adding wall art and/or framing their own artwork can make the room feel extra unique. My 5 year old has painted several pictures that we have framed around the house and it makes him feel so special!
Step 5: Personalize with a Print Sticker Wall
Ever thought about giving them a wall to decorate with their own sticker designs? Have them sketch out some ideas, and then you can print stickers and slap out a sticky wall for them. They can stick to the theme or craft a totally unique visual story. Remember, we are not putting limits on their creative expression! And picture their little faces lighting up when you show them what they’ve created and the fact that they can slap it on the wall! So much fun.
Step 6: Those Personal Touches
Now for the finishing touches that make the room distinctly theirs. Think about adding a shelf for their trophies or medals, or a snug corner perfect for curling up with a good book—these elements transform the space from simply stylish to truly special. This is their sanctuary, a place where they can fully express themselves in all their glorious, quirky ways. Let’s roll up our sleeves and craft a room that captures the spirit and joy of being a kid! I can’t wait to get started!
